Following news at the start of the year that a new Ghostbusters film was in the works, it has now been confirmed that young “Stranger Things” star, Finn Wolfhard, has been cast in a lead role.

As fans of the Netflix ‘Stranger Things” series know, Wolfhard has already donned the Ghostbusters garb in season two when his character and friends dress up like the original GB stars for Halloween.

Also announced to the cast of the upcoming film are the McKenna Grace, who portrays a young Carol Danvers in the 2019 hit “Captain Marvel”, as well as having recurring roles on ‘Young Sheldon’ and ‘Fuller House’.  Grace is expected to play the sister of Finn Wolfhard’s character and actress Carrie Coon (FX’s ‘Fargo’) has been cast as their single mother, possibly the daughter of one of the original Ghostbusters.

The upcoming addition to the GB franchise will be directed by the movie’s co-writer, Jason Reitman, the son of Ghostbusters 1 and 2 director Ivan Reitman (who takes the Produce helm), and filming is reported to begin in October.

There have been strong hints that Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson will come back as their Ghostbuster characters in the new film, but no word yet as to whether Bill Murray will return in his role as Peter Venkman. Murray had an extensive cameo in the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot and is still close with Dan Aykroyd, as seen around Kingston in late 2017 when the duo was spotted hanging out in a number of locations in and around the city.

More news is expected about the upcoming as-yet-unnamed Ghostbusters movie this summer when Jason Reitman attends the Ghostbusters Fan Fest in LA on June 7 and 8.  Reitman will be joined by his father, GB director and producer Ivan Reitman, Dan Aykroyd (Dr. Raymond Stantz) and Ernie Hudson as well as the Ghostbusters theme song writer-performer, Ray Parker Jr.

Ghostbusters was conceived by Dan Aykroyd at his family farm just north of Kingston, influenced by generations of his family’s involvement with the paranormal including his father, Peter Aykroyd, who authored A History of Ghosts: The True Story of Séances, Mediums, Ghosts and Ghostbusters.

As Dan Aykroyd explained in a CBC interview with George Stroumboulopoulos (below), his great-grandfather – a psychic researcher and Kingston dentist who held seances at the farm – was just one of the family members involved with the paranormal.
