Avril Lavigne appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night for the first performance of her new song “Head Above Water”. (video below)
This marks the first song released by the singer, who was raised in nearby Napanee, since co-writing and performing the charity single “Fly” for the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games.
The tune will be included on Lavigne’s upcoming sixth studio album which will be released five years after her previous self-titled album, featuring hits “Here’s to Never Growing Up”, “Let Me Go” and “Hello Kitty”.
“Head Above Water” was released mid-day last Wednesday, September 19 and quickly reached #8 on the iTunes worldwide song chart, according to KWORB.net, which maintains a daily list of song rankings across multiple countries.
In its first full day on the charts, the single reached iTunes’ top position worldwide and maintained that spot until September 24, when it was unseated by Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You” (featuring Cardi B). The Maroon 5 song was released last May, but received a surge in popularity after hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 that same day and following the September 19th announcement they would be performing at the Super Bowl Halftime show.
Avril’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night was recorded on September 12 and marks her fifth appearance on the late night show. The official music video for “Head Above Water” was also released today, coinciding with Avril’s 34th birthday.

“Head Above Water” was written by Avril Lavigne, Travis Clark and Stephan Moccio and produced by Stephan Moccio. It details the personal side of Avril’s journey through her widely reported ongoing battle with Lyme Disease, sharing the most intimate look at her experience and how she has emerged stronger than ever.
“One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die,” Avril said.”My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed, ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.”
The Avril Lavigne Foundation has also launched a charitable t-shirt campaign that will raise funds to directly impact individuals affected by Lyme who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford treatment. Get your t-shirt here
