Avril Lavigne Credits Napanee Upbringing for Resisting Hollywood Temptations

This November’s Maxim magazine cover girl is 26 year old Belleville-born and Napanee-raised Avril Lavigne.

In interview excerpts released by the magazine, Lavigne acknowledges the need to keep both her feet on the ground and her lifestyle in check by avoiding the temptations of the Hollywood lifestyle – an environment that she thinks might have led to trouble for some other famous names in the news.

“I got here on my own. I came from a small town and grew up in a regular home,” she said. ” I know what I’ve worked hard for…I’ve seen a lot of people who have gone a little crazy and who are really into the Hollywood scene. I don’t really like to hang out with people like that.”

With regard to how her style sensibility has changed since her first cover shoot, a time Avril admits she was a nervous 19 year-old tomboy, the three-time Maxim cover girl cites now being older and more comfortable with her femininity – reckoning that sexy women satisfy two prerequisites: “Attitude and confidence”.

She also stated that her upcoming album, which she had been working on for the past two-and-a-half years, will be “the first that is not about boy-bashing”, and instead focus on her personal experiences to date.

“I’ve lived a lot, gone through a lot, and put a lot into my song-writing. These songs are very meaningful to me,” she said.

As for the other ladies dominating the charts currently, Lavigne mentioned “it’s an interesting period in music right now” that’s “fueled by a lot of ‘80s inspiration.” and added that “A lot of girls are really into their image and costumes and going over the top”.

She cites Ke$ha as a favourite of hers. “Her songs are fun to party to and her lyrics are hilarious.”

Having filed for divorce from musician Deryck Whibley last October, Lavigne now wants a classy man.

“A gentleman who opens the door and gives flowers and always puts the lady first…I’m a little old-fashioned like that.”

Maxim Photoshop Disaster?

Unfortunately, Avril’s photo on the Maxim cover has been ridiculed online as a “photoshop disaster” by keen observers who note the atrophied look of her right arm.

Further investigation appears to indicate the photo was altered to make her waist appear narrower than it actually is, or otherwise alter the curve of her body.

Others have remarked that the area above her belt-line may not appear correct, raising speculation that it was an attempt to make it appear Lavigne exposed a little more more skin than she actually did.

Along with the overly thin right arm, a strand of hair (on the left side of the “O”) appears to be shifted left in the photo.

To date, there has been no official response by Maxim magazine about these photoshopped alterations.

Avril Lavigne was raised in Napanee, Ontario – about 20 minutes west of Kingston.
