Downtown Kingston! has announced contenders for this year’s Movies in the Square lineup.
The annual free outdoor movie nights take place in Springer Market Square behind city hall one night a week between June and September.
This year, the finalists include films that range from 1950s classics “All About Eve” (Bette Davis) and “Sunset Boulevard” (William Holden, Gloria Swanson) to the 2017 flicks “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Wonder Woman”…. which ALMOST had a Kingston connection, when acclaimed television director Michelle McLaren (Artsci’86) was hired by Warner Bros to helm the film in 2014.
The Queen’s University alumnae – who has directed hit TV shows like “Game of Thrones”, “Westworld”, and “Breaking Bad” – was the originally announced “Wonder Woman” director, but she and the studio parted ways about five months later due to creative differences.
McLaren was later replaced by Patty Jenkins – who had a similar experience in 2011, after being originally hired to direct the second Thor film – with Wonder Woman going on to become the smash hit of 2017.

Fortunately, Michelle McLaren will get another crack at a comic-based film when she directs “Cowboy Ninja Viking”, slated for release in 2019 with mega-star Chris Pratt of the “Jurassic World” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchises and who recently appeared in “Avengers: Infinity War”.
